Get to Know the MWBWG: "Speed Networking" with Mentors and the Board
We are excited to offer a new “Speed Networking” event at this year's conference! We want students and early career professionals to have the opportunity to meet and connect with MWBWG members from a variety of backgrounds. Students and early career professionals who chose to sign up for this event will rotate through 10 minute meetings with mentors and members of the MWBWG board. This is a great opportunity for students and early career members to learn more about different career paths, as well as a chance for MWBWG members to get to know each other! We hope this format will help break the ice and encourage more interaction throughout the rest of the meeting.
If you are a MWBWG member interested in volunteering as a mentor, or a student/early career member interested in participating, please indicate so with your registration. Mentors can be from any career field.
This event will be held Wednesday, April 3rd.

Join this interactive field trip to explore two cutting edge advances in bat tracking technology - Wildlife Drones' aerial telemetry receiver and the tower-based Motus network. We share examples where these approaches have been used for bat research in the past, provide expert tips on how to use them to answer a variety of research questions, and explain how you can readily adopt them yourself. You’ll get to experience what the different types of data look like so you can consider how they may be applied to your own work. You will also gain insights on what it is like to operate different types of drones and conduct surveys using different techniques. So come along and join industry experts to see how it is now possible for you to collect more data, more often with less effort. We actively encourage people from a diverse range of backgrounds to attend, share their experiences and explore new ideas with others. This field trip is suitable for those who are curious to learn how to get started using drones for wildlife research and management, right through to experienced drone pilots who are interested in expanding their skillset with new sensors and techniques.
Ryan Cruz, Environmental Technology Consultant with Wildlife Drones, will lead the demonstration of the world's first UAV-based radio-tracking system. This technology has been used extensively for bat research, including right here in Ohio. It has helped researchers find their animals both on the wing and in their roosts with more accuracy and greater tag detection distances
Austin Waag will lead the demonstration on automated telemetry compatible with the Motus network. Austin is a bat biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey currently researching ecology, behavior, and disease dynamics of bats throughout western North America. Since 2017, Austin has been constructing Motus towers and analyzing data output from the collaborative Motus network to autonomously monitor bat movements.
